The Hungarian national team suffered a 4-0 defeat in the Netherlands in the 5th round of the A-League group stage, so they will surely finish in third place in the Nations League group. However, the meeting was significantly overshadowed by Ádám Szalai’s illness, which caused the game to be paused for a longer time. The best of the field was Dénes Dibusz.
The match started well for us, as we played dangerously and could have taken the lead, fully deserved. This was also acknowledged by Ronald Koeman, the national team captain, after the whistle.
Ádám Szalai’s illness and the fact that the home team could score 11 straight after the restart (Wout Weghorst converted) had a decisive influence on the further development of the match. The Netherlands gradually took control of the game. It was also very bad for us that before the end of the half, Cody Gakpo sold another, also legitimate 11.
After the turnover, our team tried again at first, but the scenario of the game was almost the same as in the first half. Denzel Dumfries’ goal in the 64th minute decided the match for good. The fact that we got away with four conceded goals was thanks to the excellent defender Dénes Dibusz.
After a great Hungarian start, the shock came: Ádám Szalai’s illness broke the team, and the video referee started the Dutch cylinder
Now comes the Grading Diary of NB1.hu, founded in 1999, in which we rate those players who spent at least 30 minutes on the field on a scale of 1 to 10.
Dénes Dibusz 8
No mortal goalkeeper can do more than what he did for the Hungarian national team on Saturday night. He couldn’t do anything about the scored goals, not even the third one, because Dumfries’ bomb came from close range, very strong. Our goalkeeper’s vision and movement were disturbed by those in front of him. He saved our national team from several goals.
Balogh Botond 4
He didn’t really find his place and rhythm. He had some good interventions, but made several inaccurate passes. He lost all but one of his fights. He was most involved in the fourth goal, because Orbán Koopmeiners headed it into our goal.
Willi Orbán 5
He got a yellow card already in the sixth minute, so he had to play more carefully so that we don’t fall into a man disadvantage, because then the problem could have been even worse. He did not win a decisive duel on the ground. In the situation before the first scored goal, he should not have cleared it with his head, he was also helpless in the third one, even though the cross came in the middle. But he was in the fourth. He played the best from our direct defense.
Márton Dárdai 5
Neither the first nor the third goal conceded, he could not save in the air (he did it two or three times, i.e. he compensated a bit), despite the fact that he probably had the most chances to do so in both situations. He couldn’t take part in the structure of our attacks either. Unfortunately, this was true for all of our players from the inner third of our defense. But at least he tried long balls.
The Dutchman, who scored a goal after Szalai was ill, reacted to the criticism
Loic Nego 4
For the first and third goals, the pass from the Dutch came from his side in front of our goal. In the latter, it was best seen that he did not even try to attack his opponent. It didn’t have the dynamics we needed. The momentum still characterized him in the first minute, but then he was caught off guard.
Tamás Nikitscher 4
It was his weakest performance in a crested jersey to date. For the first goal scored, he was unable to win the duel in the air, which decisively influenced the match. There was no problem with his passing efficiency, but he didn’t take too many risks. The most revealing thing about his performance is that he lost half of his duels on the ground, even though he pushed Ádám Nagy out of the starting team because he is physically stronger.
András Schäfer 4
There was no problem with his attitude and his running volume. However, only 19 of his 28 passes were good. An equally important and painful aspect is that he lost three important duels on the ground. He couldn’t add much quality to our attacks. This was clear evidence of the fact that in the 3rd minute, after Szoboszlai’s own foul, he shot horribly over the rebound from 11 meters from the center. And then the score of the match was still 0-0. This was a decisive moment.
Great Psalm 4
In the last matches, he was one of the best of the Hungarian national team. We can safely say that it became one of the biggest audience favorites. In the match against the Netherlands, however, he did not even come close to what he has provided in the past period. He scored 11 before the end of the first half, and the biggest problem with that was not that he couldn’t score, but that it looked like he didn’t have a chance to intervene properly. He was also involved in the third and fourth goals of the Dutch, and in addition, he did not come out of his duels too bright. Looking to the future, he, his teammates, the professional staff and the public can be comforted by the fact that he can only play better than this. After the home team took the lead, he made a great pass to Sallai, whose header was saved by the goalkeeper. But a flash in the attacks and many mistakes in the defense in this position, against such an opponent, is not enough.
Ádám Szalai’s condition: the Dutch apologize, Kerkez reacted immediately
Sallai Roland 5
He could have equalized after the leading goal of the Dutch, but he headed weakly from a dangerous position and angle, and Verbruggen saved easily. He had another near-flash in the second half, but it was even less of a goal threat. True, he didn’t get a perfect ball. If he gets more proper balls and has someone to play with better, he could have been even more dangerous. He had to focus on defense, which grinded him down.
Dominik Szoboszlai 4
We could have taken the lead, but from a great shot at the defender. He waited too long or was selfish. It’s a matter of judgement, but it was definitely a crucial mistake. He started in an agile way, because the jump took place after he had won the ball. After that, he practically disappeared in the first half. After the break, he had two typical Szoboszlai passes, he also made a nice pass to Sallai in the second half, but he seems to be starting to feel that he is not playing as much in Liverpool as before.
Barnabás Varga 4
The same applies to him as to Zsolt Nagy: you can only play better than this. He wasn’t dangerous in the air, and he didn’t come out overall victorious in his aerial duels either. He barely got to the ball, he doesn’t usually lose so many duels, as he did in Amsterdam. It says a lot about his performance that Marco Rossi replaced him at 2-0, he felt so much that he was not a threat. In the 60th minute He was replaced by Levente Szabó (4)who had a three-point pass, but lost a few duels. It should be added, however, that he was given the opportunity to prove himself in a team in a very difficult situation, which, in addition to Varga’s weaker performance, meant confidence for the future, since he was able to take the field in a crested jersey for the first time.
