Portugal: Storms and floods in the south of the country –

Roads in southern Portugal have turned into rivers in a matter of minutes, with rushing torrents sweeping away everything in their path.

Beja and Faro provinces had been placed under an orange weather warning until 6pm as heavy rain was expected and there was a chance of flash flooding, meteorologist Maria Joao Frada said.

The Algarve and four other regions of Portugal have been put on alert due to the torrential rains, with entire regions hit by flash floods for a second day.

The Algarve in particular, a favorite tourist destination, was hit by torrential rains.

According to local reports, it only took five minutes for the streets to flood.

Dozens of vehicles were swept away by the rush of torrents, while mud and debris have covered everything in the areas where the waters receded.

Comparison with Valencia

The dangerous situation comes after floods in the Valencia region of Spain killed more than 220 people and destroyed thousands of homes just two weeks ago.

Extreme weather continued to hit large swaths of Spain this week, with thousands of people forced from their homes in the Malaga region and much of the country still on alert as the storms show no sign of abating.

“It has the potential to cause flash flooding again, like yesterday, but it’s not comparable to what happened in Spain. It is a milder situation, but they do not cease to be floods and they can have negative effects, causing some damage,” Maria Joao Frada told Lusa news agency.
