netflix Sixty million households around the world tuned in as Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson, and streams of the event peaked at 65 million. The subscription streaming service also said 50 million households watched Katie Taylor take on Amanda Serrano, making it the most-watched women’s professional sporting event in U.S. history.

The fight was also streamed in over 6,000 bars and restaurants in the United States, setting a record for the largest commercial distribution in sports.

The fight’s promoter, Most Valuable Promotions, which Paul co-owns, told CNBC that 72,300 people attended the fight Friday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Dallas Cowboys Stadium has a seating capacity of 80,000.

Gate earnings for the fight topped $18 million, the promoter said.

Outside of Nevada, it was the biggest boxing gate in history. The previous record was $9 million for the 2021 match between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders at AT&T Stadium.

MVP said it had a higher gate than any other non-Las Vegas UFC fight with the exception of Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez in New York in 2016.

The fight dominated social conversation, with #PaulTyson becoming the top trending topic on X, formerly Twitter.

But it wasn’t good news for Netflix. Many viewers experienced buffering issues, streaming glitches, and low-resolution video making the fight unwatchable.

Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of MVP, said: CNBC ‘Closing Bell’ On Friday, both Tyson and Paul will make eight figures for the fight, while Taylor and Serrano will also have record paydays for women’s boxing.

The fight between 27-year-old YouTube influencer-turned-boxer Paul and 58-year-old boxing legend Tyson will air free to subscribers on Netflix.

The event also featured one of the most anticipated women’s boxing rematches in history: undisputed super lightweight champion Katie Taylor versus unified featherweight champion Amanda Serrano.

Netflix has more than 283 million paid memberships in more than 190 countries. The fight was an important test as streamers move deeper into the sports space and boxing eschews the pay-per-view model.

“Numbers don’t lie,” Paul said during Wednesday’s game press conference. “People want to see this and it’s an amazing achievement. … “This is a statement that we had the largest live gate outside of Vegas in American boxing history.”

Tickets for Friday’s game ranged from roughly $58 to $1,500 on StubHub. MVP also sold premium packages including: $2 Million VIP Experience Ringside seating is included. The promotion company said 375 VIP seats were sold out.

For comparison’s sake, the biggest fight in Las Vegas history took place in 2015 between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. It is said that more than $72 million was spent on the fight. Las Vegas Review-Journal.
