Apple has used IPS panels for several years in the Macbook Pro, but while some other manufacturers have switched to Quantum Dot technology, Apple has stuck to KSF phosphor. Much depends on the fact that the older Quantum Dot panels used cadmium, but also that they have a higher efficiency and therefore provide longer battery life in laptops.
No reports analyst Ross Young that the new Macbook Pro models with M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max have new screens that use Quantum Dot technology for the first time. Apple did not mention anything about improved screens in the press releases where the new models were launched, but it is about a relatively large improvement in color gamut. Ross Young has shared charts showing how much red, green and blue peaks are more prominent on the new screens.
The new generation of Quantom Dot panels no longer contain cadmium and in addition to a wider color gamut and more accurate colors, they perform better in moving images such as video and games.
According to rumors, Apple plans to switch to OLED technology in the Macbook Pro sometime in the future, possibly in 2026. Before that, the company was working on micro-LED displays, but that technology has not to go as far as Apple had hoped.
