He’s the mayor Enzo Romeo made it known in a press release issued on the afternoon of Saturday 16 November.
«I decided to write these few lines to inform my city and my fellow citizens on an issue which, with conviction, we pursued during the electoral campaign and which, yesterday evening, has found full operation» says Romeo.
«In our path that led us to the government of the city – he continues – we said that we cannot continue to ask citizens for sacrifices if politics, first and foremost, does not set the example, with a considerable cut in the costs of politics , starting from the undersigned, passing through councilors and city councilors. Reduction intervention that had not yet been carried out because it was necessary to plan it for the new financial year, therefore starting from 1 January 2025».
The choice was ratified at the end of the city council meeting on Friday: «I brought together my majority, my councilors and my city councilors with whom we addressed the issue of cuts. From them I found full and convinced unanimous support and I was given a full mandate to proceed in full compliance with what we professed during the electoral campaign. So, without fanfare and with the seriousness and sobriety that distinguishes us, late in the evening, yesterday, I convened the council which decided, unanimously, a further 20% cut in the emoluments of the mayor, aldermen, prime minister and city councilorswhich is added to the 10% cut already in place.”
In summary, the mayor continues, «in the municipality of Vibo Valentia, politicians cut 30% of their salaries, putting the city and its citizens first. Around 200 thousand euros per year will be saved by the institution, sums that will be allocated to schools, greenery, services for our children and families. The direct testimony that, in politics, there are also people who know how to respect the commitments they have made and councilors and councilors of the progressive coalition have given a full and complete demonstration of this.”
