Disney has removed a “Star Wars” movie announced for 2026 from the calendar. “Ice Age 6” moves into the vacated spot.
No new “Star Wars” film will be released in cinemas in December 2026. As the US industry magazine “Variety” reportsthe film studio Disney has removed a previously untitled film from the galaxy far, far away from the release calendar that was previously scheduled for December 18, 2026. “Ice Age 6,” which was announced just a few days ago, is now moving to the lucrative pre-Christmas date. It remains unclear at first whether the “Star Wars” project is the film about Daisy Ridley’s, 32, character Rey.
Does the “Star Wars” film about Rey still have a future?
It had been known since April 2023 that Ridley’s popular character Rey Skywalker, who was first seen in the so-called sequel trilogy from 2015 to 2019, would get his own film. According to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, 71, he should accompany Rey in setting up a new Jedi order. Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, 46, is set to direct.
But according to US media, two different teams of authors have already worked on the project in the past. “Lost” creator Damon Lindelof, 51, and Justin Britt-Gibson were followed in 2023 by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, 65, who in turn is said to have left the “Star Wars” film just a few weeks ago. This may indicate creative differences and different story approaches in the film’s development behind the scenes.
“Star Wars” will continue on the big screen in 2026
In addition, US industry media reported just last week that producer Simon Kinberg, 51, would be working on a new “Star Wars” trilogy for Disney and Lucasfilm. What is certain, however, is that the Star Wars saga will continue on the big screen in May 2026. Then “The Mandalorian & Grogu” by director Jon Favreau, 58, about the protagonists of the streaming series “The Mandalorian” will be released.
Another, also as yet untitled, “Star Wars” film is listed in Disney’s release calendar for December 17, 2027.
