The New York Lions from Braunschweig lit a candle on their social media channels in memory of Friedrich Knapp. The entrepreneur who owns the “New Yorker” fashion line is also considered the owner of the German record champions. Knapp died on Sylt after an illness at the age of 73.
Knapp leaves behind three children and his partner. The company he founded has grown from a German fashion retailer into a global organization that today employs around 23,000 people in over 1,200 branches in 47 countries. His shops also mark several German cities. Management praised Knapp as a visionary and courageous “born entrepreneur” who, through his actions, had made “New Yorker” a leading global fashion company.
The mayor of Braunschweig Thorsten Kornblum praised Knapp as an exceptional entrepreneur who not only built a successful label, but who was also committed to the city, especially in the fields of sports, culture and support for children. Knapp led his own success story to the end. Kornblum also praised Knapp’s vision, as he had organized the company’s succession during his lifetime. His daughter Sophie Knapp represents the family on the board of directors as deputy chairperson and is expected to continue her father’s life’s work.
