Wukirsari Tourism Village Shines on Global Stage
In a remarkable achievement for Indonesian tourism, Wukirsari Tourism Village in Imogiri District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, was awarded the prestigious title of Best Tourism Village 2024 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This recognition places Wukirsari among the elite group of 55 best tourism villages globally, showcasing its rich culture and commitment to sustainable practices. The announcement, made during a ceremony in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, on November 14, 2024, was streamed live on the official UNWTO YouTube channel.
A Testament to Cultural and Natural Heritage
Wukirsari’s triumph can be attributed to its unique blend of cultural richness and environmental sustainability. The village stood out in a competitive field that included well-known tourism villages from different countries. “This award is a global recognition of the tourism village in Bantul. There are many heritages there, and Wukirsari has managed to preserve these heritages, including a sustainable environment,” stated Agus Budiraharja, Secretary of Bantul Regency, reflecting on the village’s accomplishments on November 15.
One of the key elements that contributed to Wukirsari’s success is its thriving batik craft, particularly from the well-known Giriloyo center. This area has nurtured generations of batik artisans, maintaining a vibrant cultural tapestry that attracts both local and international visitors.
Rich Cultural Craftsmanship
The artisans of Wukirsari specialize not only in batik but also in other traditional crafts such as tatah sungging (wood carving) and keris (traditional dagger) making. In addition, visitors are drawn to the historical royal tombs nearby and the picturesque landscapes that define this unique village.
Bahtiar, a manager at Kampung Batik Giriloyo, expressed his optimism about the recognition. “Wukirsari has two intangible cultural heritages, namely wayang (shadow puppet) and batik,” he noted, emphasizing the village’s commitment to preserving its cultural traditions.
Assessing Excellence: The Award Criteria
The selection process for the Best Tourism Village award involved rigorous evaluations based on 300 criteria, including natural and cultural resources, commitment to sustainability, and innovative tourism development practices aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each nominated village must present legal documents and other proofs of their tourism strategies, ensuring that only the most deserving communities receive this honor.
Previously, Wukirsari was named the champion of the advanced tourism village category in 2023 by Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, showcasing a continuous trajectory of excellence in promoting local culture and responsible tourism.
Recognition for Indonesia’s Tourism Sector
Alongside Wukirsari Tourism Village, Jatiluwih Tourism Village in Tabanan, Bali, also represented Indonesia at the UNWTO event, highlighting the diverse and rich tourism experiences available within the country. The recognition of these villages not only enhances their profiles on the global tourism stage but also sets a benchmark for other villages in Indonesia to aspire towards greater sustainability and cultural preservation.
In a world increasingly focused on environmental sustainability, awards like this serve as critical indicators of progress in tourism practices. As villages like Wukirsari become showcases for sustainable tourism, they inspire similar initiatives elsewhere, promoting a holistic approach to tourism development that respects both heritage and the environment.
Future Directions
This prestigious award for Wukirsari carries significant implications for the local community. Increased visibility on the global stage can lead to enhanced tourism, providing economic benefits that could support infrastructure, create jobs, and foster conservation efforts. The local government and tourism stakeholders are expected to collaborate further to maximize this momentum while ensuring the village’s cultural integrity is maintained.
As Wukirsari Tourism Village prepares to share its story with an even broader audience, stakeholders are encouraged to engage with visitors through local events, cultural performances, and workshops that illustrate the village’s dedication to craftsmanship and sustainability.
