Windows 11 dock windows in the maximize button in the file explorer Microsoft is testing different text variants

If we open the file explorer and move the mouse over the maximize button, the snap layout for the different docking variants is displayed. Or you can simply open it using the Windows key + Z (see also this tutorial).

Microsoft is now testing new variants in the current beta to better represent this function. You should put yourself in the position of a layman who at first can’t do anything with the various squares that are displayed there. So a text is added for this function. What it will ultimately be remains to be seen. Microsoft is currently testing these variants:

  • Select where you want this window to move
  • Choose where to place this window
  • Choose where to dock this window
  • Choose an app layout for your screen

Well, do you already have a favorite that is most understandable even for laypeople?

This function is still hidden in 22635.4510. And you can assume that the “winner” among the variants will later be activated for everyone. As long as you can try it out:

  • Download and unzip ViVeTool
  • Right-click in the folder and open the terminal while holding down the Ctrl+Shift key (starts as administrator)
  • .vivetool /enable //id:53655156 /variant:X
    • 0 no text
    • 1 postponed
    • 2 arranged
    • 3 docked
    • 4 App-Layout

It is not necessary to restart explorer.exe. If you open Explorer, the change will be displayed immediately. (The box in the text should become the Windows key)
