- Early improvement in patient quality of life
Morelia, Michoacán, November 15, 2024.- On World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Day, caused by smoking, the Ministry of Health of Michoacán (SSM) invites you to know the warning signs to detect the condition in early stages, even though treatment can improve the quality of life of the patient.
Difficulty breathing and feeling tired, chronic cough, as well as intense episodes of coughing and expectoration (mucus), which can last several days or weeks, are some of the symptoms that, if not treated, worsen, as well as activities. Everyday activities such as climbing stairs or bathing can become very difficult, as the patient becomes agitated.
At the national level, it is estimated that since 2020, 24,690 deaths from COPD have been recorded in Mexico, a disease caused by smoking, wood smoke, and exposure to industrial solvents. And if it is not diagnosed in time it is potentially fatal.
The disease has a slow evolution that becomes evident after the age of 40 and as it progresses without treatment, patients can become more complicated, which is why it is important to confirm if you suspect COPD, through spirometry, a test capable of measuring the volume of air flow inside the lungs and which is requested in the health centers of Michoacán.
Treatment for those suffering from COPD consists of inhaled bronchodilators and corticosteroids, and they are free for those who do not have social security in health centers, but at the private level it is estimated that they have a cost of 29 thousand pesos annually, plus 149 thousand of hospitalization expenses.
