Bullet hits Southwest Airlines plane as it prepares to depart from Dallas airport

(CNN) – Dallas Police are investigating after a Southwest Airlines flight was hit by a bullet while preparing to depart from Dallas Love Field Airport in Texas on Friday night, authorities said.

The bullet apparently hit the right side of the plane, just below the flight deck, as the plane was taxiing onto the runway for takeoff from Dallas to Indianapolis just before 10 p.m., according to Southwest Airlines.

No injuries were reported and the flight returned safely to the gate, where passengers disembarked, according to authorities.
“Southwest will accommodate our customers on another flight,” the airline said. “Law enforcement authorities were notified and the plane was removed from service.”

It is unclear where the shot came from or whether the plane was the intended target. No arrests had been made as of early Saturday.

The Dallas Police Department told CNN that responding officers found the plane had been hit by gunfire, and an investigation is now underway.

The Boeing 737-800 plane was damaged after the bullet hit “near the cockpit,” according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Meanwhile, the runway from which the plane took off reopened after it was temporarily closed Friday night while police conducted their investigation.

“There was minimal impact on airport operations,” the airport said in a statement posted on X.

Also this Friday, passengers on another Southwest Airlines flight in Denver had to evacuate after a passenger’s cell phone battery caught fire, causing a fire in a seat on the plane.

The incident comes days after regulators suspended all flights to Haiti for a month after three U.S. airline planes were hit by bullets while flying over Port-au-Prince.

It also takes place about two years after a woman allegedly fired several shots into the air at Dallas Love Field Airport, sparking chaos as travelers fled. Dallas Love Field Airport is located 9 km northwest of downtown Dallas and primarily serves Southwest Airlines, according to its website.
