Netherlands: Investigation into police brutality against pro-Palestine protesters –

Dutch authorities announced today that they are investigating reports of police violence against protesters who took part in a banned pro-Palestinian rally last Wednesday night, which was disbanded.

Amsterdam police told X they are aware of footage circulating online showing officers beating protesters who had been released after being brought to the protest site. A total of 281 protesters were brought in by police during the demonstration in central Amsterdam on Wednesday after they defied a ban imposed following violent incidents following the soccer match between Ajax and Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv last week.

The arrested protesters were taken to buses that took them to a location on the outskirts of the city, where they were released.

Video released online, including on X, shows police in anti-protest gear hitting people with globes as they appear to walk away after being released in the harbor area west of Amsterdam.

Reuters notes that it was unable to verify the authenticity of the images.

“Images showing the police acting violently are always unpleasant to see and will be assessed and judged. Also in this case,” Amsterdam police said in a post on X. Police, which have been given expanded powers for street checks in the Dutch capital, have detained or removed hundreds of protesters since last week’s clashes, on an emergency basis. measures that apply at least until today. Authorities in France have also stepped up security ahead of today’s France-Israel soccer match after last week’s violence in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam police have said Maccabi fans last week attacked a taxi and burned a Palestinian flag while anti-Israel gangs chased them on scooters and beat them after an online call to taxi drivers. Five injured were taken to hospitals for short treatment and discharged. Police escorted hundreds of Maccabi fans to their hotels.

Israeli and Dutch politicians have denounced the attacks as anti-Semitic and recalled the persecution of Jews during World War II. Palestinian supporters countered that they were responding to an attack by Maccabi supporters and provocative anti-Arab slogans.

Four of the 62 suspects arrested in the violent incidents, including ten Israelis, remain in custody. Police are still looking for suspects.
