Straubing Tigers win the Munich derby!

The Straubing Tigers celebrated an impressive 5-2 away win against EHC Red Bull Munich. In an intense game, the Tigers showed their dominance, especially in the first two periods, before defending their lead in the final period and perfecting the victory with an empty-net goal from Mike Connolly.

EHC Red Bull Munich started the game furiously and scored their first goal after just a few seconds. DeSousa scored to make it 1-0 for Munich (00:21) after assists from Adam Brooks and Taro Hirose. But the Straubing Tigers’ response didn’t take long to arrive: Skyler McKenzie equalized to 1-1 in the 3rd minute, supported by Tim Brunnhuber (02:14). But the Munich team also upped their game when Eisenschmid took the lead for the hosts again in the 8th minute (07:12), with support from Yasin Ehliz. The deficit didn’t upset the Straubing Tigers, even though Philip Samuelsson had to go to the penalty box for two minutes for tripping. The Lower Bavarians continued to fight and finally rewarded themselves: Marcel Müller equalized again in the 18th minute and made it 2-2 (17:25). Shortly before the end of the third, Munich’s Jakob Weber received a penalty for tripping, which gave the Tigers a chance to dominate at the start of the second third. The Straubing Tigers took command in the second third. After a penalty against Munich for a high stick, Taylor Leier put the Tigers in the lead when he scored 2:3 in the 27th minute (26:10), prepared by Adrian Klein. Straubing showed impressive dominance in this phase and almost completely controlled the game. Until the middle of the third, Munich had neither managed a shot on goal nor an attack on the Straubing goal. The Straubingers were briefly outnumbered when Taylor Leier had to go to the penalty box for two minutes because of a high stick. But the defense was secure and the outnumbered game was survived without conceding a goal. Shortly before the end of the third, Tim Brunnhuber increased the lead to 2:4 for the Tigers (38:59) with a well-placed shot. After his goal, Brunnhuber himself had to go to the penalty box for two minutes for tripping. Despite this penalty, Straubing took a lot of self-confidence into the second break. In the final third the game initially remained open and intense, with good approaches on both sides. Justin Scott had promising shots, but they just missed the Munich goal. The Straubing Tigers remained under pressure, but Munich was more active than in the second half and was able to set more offensive accents. However, clear scoring opportunities remained in short supply. With 3:40 minutes on the clock, Munich pulled its goalkeeper to make up the deficit with an additional field player. The game became increasingly heated and a major altercation resulted in a 5-minute penalty for Travis St. Denis for an unlawful physical attack and another 5-minute penalty for Munich for a fight. Despite the pressure from Munich, Mike Connolly finally secured the game for the Tigers when he scored into the empty goal (19:44). The Straubing Tigers took home a hard-fought 5-2 victory and once again showed their strength in a high-class duel.
