US President-elect Donald Trump announced today that he will entrust the directorship of the National Intelligence Service to Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman whose pro-Russia positions have caused controversy.
“I know Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that characterized her illustrious career (in the U.S. armed forces), defending our constitutional rights and securing peace through strength,” Trump said in a statement.
Immediately after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Gabbard, 43, who represented Hawaii for eight years in the House of Representatives (2013-2021), wrote in a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter):
“This war and its miseries could have been easily avoided if the Biden administration and NATO had taken into account Russia’s legitimate security concerns about Ukraine’s (potential) NATO accession, since doing so would mean that US and NATO (military) forces would be on Russia’s borders.”
