Nexon subsidiary Embark Studio is concentrating its efforts on the final stages of the PvPvE (player-to-player or against the environment) survival shooter ‘Ark Raiders’. Sven Grundberg, director of Embark Studio, said, “We will draw a worldview with hope and charm to differentiate it from games of the same genre.”

Nexon conducted a media interview with ‘Ark Raiders’ on the 15th at BEXCO, Haeundae-gu, Busan, where ‘G-Star 2024’ was held. Ark Raiders is a survival shooter genre game being developed by Embark Studio, a Swedish developer that achieved success with ‘The Finals’. It is being developed for release in 2025 and will be serviced on PC and consoles (PS, Xbox).

Embark Studio’s director Sven Drundberg and director Daniele Vitelli attended the interview that day. Ark Raiders is a worldview set in a ruined future world where people must survive against the murderous mechanical life form ‘ARC’. As a ‘Raider’, the player must go to the ground and perform missions to retrieve resources.

Depending on the user’s choice, there is a back and forth between cooperation and competition. You can kill the Arc Machine with a raider on the ground and share the rewards, or you can attack another raider and loot the loot before returning. To return safely, careful observation of the surrounding environment and strategic play using guns, ammunition, gadgets, and tools appropriate to the situation are required.

Director Grundberg defined the worldview of Ark Raiders as ‘post-post-apocalyptic.’ He also explained that he wanted to differentiate himself from most similar games, which have a dark and military feel. Director Grundberg said, “It depicts a fundamentally fascinating world, an era in which humanity is trying to rebuild after the apocalypse.”

Director Daniele also emphasized that he put a lot of effort into the world view. He said, “While playing the game, I explored the mystery of the Arc Machine and tried to design the underground base that serves as a home in a very attractive way.” He added, “As a village community, NPCs (Non Player Characters) are also given personalities, so players basically have a sense of belonging. “The goal is to create a world you want to live in,” he said.

Audiovisual elements were cited as an attractive factor that differentiates the genre from similar genres. Director Grundberg said, “The world view that is connected to the audio-visual elements and a well-constructed fantasy narrative will be applied as a differentiator (from games of the same genre),” adding, “Ark Raiders is a project that has been carried out since the early days of the company’s establishment, and is focused on building infrastructure.” “I invested a lot of time,” he said.

Originally, Ark Raiders was planned to be developed in the route shooter genre and as a partial pay-per-view game. However, the genre and BM (business model) have recently changed to an extraction shooter genre and a package game. Director Grindberg responded, “As development progressed, we decided that the more appropriate BM was premium BM,” and added, “Any game goes through many changes during development.”

It is said that it received a good response in the global technical test conducted on Steam from the 24th to the 27th of last month. Director Grundberg said, “I was very motivated. I compared the results of previous tests and identified improvements, and it was well-validated for the purpose.”
