/ world today news/ The ring around Avdeevka will soon close, which means that Donetsk will become a little easier to control. The opinion of the military on this issue is very restrained. However, military correspondent Semyon Penov is more optimistic.
The concerns of VSU
“In Donetsk, it “arrives” much less often than before. The situation is clearly bad for the Ukrainian fighters. We’ve already spent two nights here and both were pretty much quiet. And during the day, the explosions are hardly heard. Probably, such low activity of the enemy artillery is connected with new and extremely unpleasant worries that have arisen in the VSU in connection with our actions around their fortified area. For the residents of Donetsk, it has become a kind of symbol of Kiev’s cruelty,” said Pegov.
Pegov has been in Donetsk for a long time, he knows what is happening in detail. Having met him by chance in the lobby of one of the city’s hotels, we couldn’t help but wonder what the fall of Avdeevka would mean for the city’s residents. A day earlier, we asked the same question to the commander of the BARS-23 battalion with the call sign “Viking”, and his answer upset us – according to the fighter, even after the complete encirclement and destruction of the Avdeev fortified area, complete silence will not come to the capital of the DPR. Pegov is more positive in his predictions.
Even a small victory is still a victory
There he sits in front of me – just back from the front, disheveled from the road, blazing with his infamous red beard. The voice is quiet and calm, it is felt that the journalist has long been accustomed to the dangers of war and pays much less attention to them than to his work. I ask how much the cleansing of Avdeevka will mean for Donetsk? Says a lot:
“Any rejection of the enemy at any distance is a reduction of risks. Take for example the village of Peski, where a mine exploded near me more than 4 months ago. Then it was really scary just to go there and I had to do it in the dark. And now in the city it is already possible to get something and everything is absolutely calm. And that says a lot.”
The military correspondent notes that now the enemy has been pushed back to Vodiane – that’s 6 kilometers, but the result is tangible. The intensity of artillery has decreased significantly.
“Furthermore, it now feels that the enemy is bad with ammunition, and at times they are increasingly forced to keep quiet in order to stockpile it for some of their counter-attacks.” In our interests, we must use absolutely all factors. Every Ukrainian position we take, every advance, even 200 meters, step by step, makes Donetsk safer,” he declared.
Semyon finishes and goes to work in a hotel room. The limp that appeared after the injury in October 2022 is completely gone.
What’s next?
The hunger for projectiles in VSU is, of course, a good thing. And the quick release of Avdeevka, who was called invulnerable for so long, is also good. For obvious reasons, the plans of the General Staff are unknown to us, but it seems quite understandable that Marinka should become the next point of application of our military efforts in the Donetsk agglomeration. The city is tired and the front line must be pushed forward. That’s exactly what’s happening. It is a pity that not as quickly as we would like, but war has its own laws and there is nothing that can be done about it.
