Asheboro – An unexpected visitor has captured attention at the North Carolina Zoo: a rare white deer was recently spotted among a wild herd on the zoo grounds.
This majestic animal is not albino, but rather has leucism, a genetic condition that causes partial loss of pigmentation.
The news was announced by the same zoo in a blog under the title “The Miraculous White Deer at the North Carolina Zoo“.
The white deer and its herd were captured by wildlife cameras placed on the zoo grounds.
These cameras document lynx, foxes, and other native species as they roam within the massive park.
“Photographs keep staff informed about the health and stability of our local wildlife populations,” the institution reported.
Zoo staff consider the deer a symbol of nature at its finest.
According to the zoo, this event coincides with the recent release of the novel Counting Miraclesby author Nicholas Sparks, which tells a story set on Purgatory Mountain, home of the zoo, and in which a white deer plays a crucial role.
White deer have deep meaning in the folklore and traditions of the Native American tribes of North Carolina.
They represent purity, hope and otherworldly messages.
