Justin Trudeau will attend APEC in Peru and the G20 summit in Brazil

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has arrived in Lima, Peru, where he will participate in the APEC summit before traveling to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the G20.

Both summits aim to improve multilateral institutions that have drawn skepticism from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

In Peru, Mr. Trudeau will participate in meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group, which mainly aim to remove trade barriers and build better ties in countries around the Pacific rim.

On Sunday, the prime minister will leave for Brazil for the G20 summit, where discussions will cover topics ranging from the war in Ukraine to artificial intelligence and ending hunger.

Both summits will include meetings with other government leaders in formal meetings as well as side discussions.

Analysts say it will be critical for Canada to try to maintain strong ties with many countries as the Trump administration considers raising tariffs and could disrupt global trade flows.

Prime Minister Trudeau is traveling with his daughter, Ella-Grace, 15.
