GAZA – Breaking a controversial taboo that has existed for a long time in society Israel Tel Aviv announced that 7,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews have been drafted into the army, which will begin this weekend.

According to a statement from the Israeli Defense Ministry, the seizure order will be issued in stages, starting Sunday, after a weapons assessment.

Israeli Defense Minister Katz plans to hold talks with relevant parties to find a compromise that would help integrate ultra-orthodox Jews (Haredim) into the military, and at the same time respecting their religious practices.

Katz emphasized that the military will make every effort to ensure a supportive environment that allows religious Jews to fulfill their military obligations while maintaining their religious lifestyle.

However, the details of how this process will take place are still unclear.

The decision follows a ruling by Israel’s Supreme Court in June, which ordered Haredi Jews to be included in the national plan, along with other Israeli citizens.

Despite this decision, the ultra-Orthodox community has historically opposed military service, saying that their duty is to study the Torah to prove to protect the Jewish identity of the people of Israel.

Israel’s Haredi Jewish population makes up about 13 percent of the country’s total population of 9.9 million.

Historically, they have been exempt from military service, which is mandatory for all Israeli citizens over the age of 18. This exclusion has fueled debate for decades, with critics arguing that it ‘undermining the principle of equality in national service.

Regional tensions are rising as a result of Israel’s ongoing offensive on the Gaza Strip, which has claimed the lives of more than 43,700 people, most of them women and children, since last October.

The conflict has also spilled over into Lebanon, with Israel carrying out deadly attacks across the country, marking a year-long escalation of cross-border conflict between Israel and Hezbollah since the Gaza war began.
