/ world today news/ “Will you support an update of the military budget?”. This is exactly the question President Rosen Plevneliev asked the representatives of the BSP at the consultations held with them on March 5.
The information about this was confirmed to ” world today news” by several independent sources. However, the head of state did not specify what exactly necessitates such an update of the budget. Plevneliev’s question was even more scandalous against the background of the loan of 16 billion BGN voted by the parliament.
The BSP, represented this time not by the leader of the parliamentary group and the party Mikhail Mikov, has not given a position on the matter because, according to them, the request for such an update would be extremely scandalous.
A check by ” world today news” shows that Plevneliev has been probing among the political forces for such an update of the military budget for at least half a month. According to our sources, the president is exerting strong political pressure to earmark money for the purchase of old NATO combat equipment. The president made such a commitment without sanction already at the NATO meeting in Dublin, which took place in September last year. It is not for nothing that after that in every interview he explains how Bulgaria should raise the money it allocates for defense in its budget.
During the adoption of the budget for 2015, Plevneliev was the first to tell the world that the money for defense was not enough, and this was precisely related to the commitment he had already made this year that Bulgaria should allocate funds and start retraining the army so that it meets the mythical “nato standards”. The topic of buying NATO weapons was also raised during the visit of the Secretary General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, in January.
” world today news” recalls that during these Stoltenberg meetings the news came out that Bulgaria was increasing the defense budget. “I informed the General Secretary that the difficult economic situation in the country last year, evidence of which was an excess deficit and bankruptcy of the fourth largest bank in Bulgaria, did not allow the budget for 2015 to allocate as much defense funds as were allocated in 2014 year. The amount is about 30 million euros less. I expect the military budget to be updated during the year so that we can fulfill the commitment and the given word,” he told the media at the time Plevneliev.
Obviously, however, the pressure from NATO has not stopped, and even with this budget money will be sought for weapons.
