YouTube Music vs Spotify: which is better?

We compare YouTube Music and Spotify, two of the main streaming music services that have a wide range of sound content, such as music and podcasts. Both services have several subscription options, so we will tell you which one is cheaper and which one we find a better value offer. Additionally, both services can be used completely free (for YouTube Music you don’t even need an account), so you can probably find value in either of them without having to spend a dime. Without further ado, YouTube Music vs Spotify, which is better?

YouTube Music vs Spotify: precio

Each service has different subscription plans, both individual and family and family.

In the following table you will find the price list for each service.

Plan
Precio YouTube Music
Precio Spotify Premium
Plan individual
$115 pesos
$129 pesos
Plan familiar
$179 pesos
$199 pesos
Student plan
$59 pesos
$69 pesos
Duo plan
Not available
$169 pesos

As you’ve probably already noticed, Spotify is a little more expensive than YouTube Music. In addition, it is likely that if you are a very frequent YouTube user, you may want to pay YouTube Premium, since any plan gives you automatic access to YouTube Music without ads.

YouTube Premium prices are as follows:

Plan
Precio YouTube Premium
Plan individual
$139 pesos
Plan familiar
$279 pesos
Student plan
$79 pesos

Now, while we believe that YouTube Music and Spotify have important differences, especially when it comes to the interface of each app or platform, we believe that if you are within the YouTube ecosystem and value paying for YouTube Premium, you are going to end up with a “double prize” ”. In other words, better go for YouTube Premium.

YouTube Music vs Spotify: music catalog

Both platforms have practically all the music you want to search for. And we say almost because if you’re an anachronistic picky eater, we think YouTube Music definitely has a better catalog. We believe that the following example, although it could be niche, illustrates well what we are saying.

This version of “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Metallica, performed on August 31, 1985 during a concert in Oakland, is only on YouTube, and therefore, you can listen to it without having to watch the video using YouTube Music. This version is not on Spotify Premium.

Metallica – For Whom the Bell Tolls (Live) [Cliff ‘Em All]

Now, we think this kind of details might be important only to some users. After all, Spotify also has a ton of live versions of “For Whom the Bell Tolls” (or whatever song you like), however, you’ll only find versions that are included on an album.

By the way, if podcasts are your thing, we also find a wide offer on YouTube Music, practically the same as on Spotify.

YouTube Music vs Spotify: which is better?

Although we believe that the decision is entirely subjective, we would say that Spotify is slightly lower for a reason that, we insist, seems very personal to us: its app is fantastic. And it’s not that YouTube Music is terrible, but that Spotify is simply fantastic. From the font choice, the graphics, the buttons to cast to a speaker, compatibility with Alexa and smart speakers, wow, we think it’s a better product for the common user.

Although, we insist, if you are in the YouTube ecosystem, we believe that paying for YouTube Premium has much more value than paying, separately, for YouTube Music or Spotify.
