The European Union announced today that it has financed, for the first time, the joint purchase of weapons by the “27”, most of which is intended for Ukraine.
The EU has already financed arms purchases to help Kiev, but did so outside its budget thanks to a financing tool for that purpose.
“This is the first time we are using the EU budget to support member states in the common arms market,” European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.
The EU invested 200 billion euros to help about 20 member countries buy equipment in the field of air defense, armor and ammunition, the majority of which will go to war-torn Ukraine, according to the text.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February 2022, the EU has been trying to strengthen its defense industry and its ability to help Kiev.
It has also set up a financial assistance mechanism to buy ammunition from the “27” and had promised to deliver at least one million artillery shells to Ukraine by the end of March 2024. This goal will be finally achieved before the end of the year, he promised. head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.
