It was found that Asians, including Koreans in the United States, use YouTube the most among social media. In addition, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn were found to be major social media platforms preferred by Asians.
According to a survey by public opinion research firm Pew Research, the social media platform most used by Asian adults in the United States is YouTube. According to a survey of English-speaking adult Asians conducted by Pew Research from February 1 to June 10, 2024, 93% of Asians had experience using YouTube. The next social media preferred by Asians was Facebook, which 65% said they used, followed by Instagram at 62%.
Asians’ preference for YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram was the same as that of other races, but the proportion of Asians with experience using it was much higher. Among whites, 82%, significantly lower than 93% of Asians, said they had experience using YouTube, 70% of Facebook, and 45% of Instagram. Black people’s YouTube use experience was 88%, which was also lower than that of Asians. However, at 73% for Facebook and 52% for Instagram, preference for Facebook was found to be higher than that of other races, including Asians. Latino respondents responded that they had experience using YouTube at 89%, Facebook at 69%, and Instagram at 59%.
After YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, the social media preferred by Asians was LinkedIn. 50% of Asian respondents said they had experience using LinkedIn. This is a higher figure than 33% for whites, 34% for blacks, and 24% for Latinos, confirming that the rate of use of LinkedIn among Asians is significantly higher than that of other races.
The next social media preferred by Asians is Reddit. 42% of Asians responded that they had experience using Reddit, which also showed a higher rate of experience compared to 24% of whites, 18% of blacks, and 22% of Latinos. In addition, Asians were found to prefer WhatsApp 39%, TikTok 31%, X (formerly Twitter) 26%, Snapchat 26%, and Pinterest 25%.
Asians’ use experience of various social media was generally higher than that of other races, but only some social media had a lower use experience rate than other races. In the case of Pinterest, 37% of whites, 36% of blacks, and 35% of Latinos responded that they had experience using it, while only 25% of Asians responded that they had experience using it. While 31% of Asians responded that they had experience using TikTok, 50% of blacks and 48% of Latinos had experience using TikTok, showing that the rate of Asian users using TikTok was relatively low.
