Berlin. Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can was sent off and his team suffered its sixth consecutive away defeat, losing 3-1 to Mainz in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Dortmund started the match unimpressively and Can was of little help when he lunged studs first at Lee Jae-sung’s ankle. The Dortmund midfielder was sent off with a straight red card in the 27th minute and Nico Schlotterbeck received a yellow card for protesting.
Lee was able to continue playing and made it clear by opening the scoring with a header in the 36th minute.
Lee remained the central figure and conceded a penalty for a foul on Serhou Guirassy three minutes later. Guirassy equalized the score from the penalty spot.
But Jonathan Burkardt restored Mainz’s lead just before the break, and Paul Nebel made it 3-1 at the start of the second half.
Dortmund’s away losing streak includes a 5-1 at Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, as well as against Real Madrid in the Champions League and at Wolfsburg in the German Cup.
Defending champion Bayer Leverkusen, meanwhile, dropped more points when Koji Miyoshi scored late to draw 1-1 with last-place Bochum in the first game under veteran coach Dieter Hecking.
A brilliant long-range strike from Jamal Musiala was enough for Bayern Munich to win narrowly at St. Pauli, who are yet to score at home this season.
Scottish striker Oliver Burke scored his first goal in more than a year for Werder Bremen, who beat Holstein Kiel 2-1 at home.
Borussia Mönchengladbach visits Leipzig later.
