The EU announced on Thursday the application of a fine of 798 million euros to Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, for anti-competitive practices in the online advertising market.
According to the European Commission – the executive arm of the EU – Meta “ties its online classified advertising service Facebook Marketplace to its personal social network Facebook” and imposes unfair trading conditions on other online advertising service providers.
The Community Executive stressed that Meta abused its dominant position by linking Facebook Marketplace to Facebook.
In this way, all users of the social network automatically have access to its buying and selling platform and are regularly exposed to its online classified ads service, whether they want to or not.
Excluded competitors
The Commission concluded that Facebook Marketplace’s competitors may be excluded, as the link gives Facebook Marketplace “a substantial distribution advantage that competitors cannot match.”
According to Brussels, Meta also abused its dominant position by unilaterally imposing unfair commercial conditions on other providers of online classified advertising services advertising on Meta’s platforms, in particular on Facebook and Instagram. Meta denies having violated the law and has already announced that he will appeal.
