The infamous American tanks are indeed coming. However, their number is only 5. We expect them between March 26 and 28, they confided in Standard Officers from the Novo Selo base. In addition to the tanks, 22 American armored personnel carriers are also arriving at the base. They are slightly higher than the Bulgarian ones, which makes transporting people more tolerable. With ours, you have to be folded in half, admitted the Bulgarian military. The five tanks and the 22nd armored personnel carrier will take part in an international exercise at the Novo Selo base. It starts in the middle of April, but its preparation has already started this month, according to people in the know. The exercise will involve 350 US military personnel as well as rangers from Her Majesty’s Army. The Bulgarian side will be represented by fighters from our mechanized brigade. In fact, before the military exercise with heavy equipment, there will be another one, which is again joint between the Bulgarian and American armies, but with fewer people and without armored vehicles. Parallel to the exercise in April, military police officers from the US and Bulgarian armies will be trained. In practice, this means that three trainings of military personnel from NATO member armies will be held simultaneously at the base. All of them were planned two years ago, according to base sources.

The coming of a heavy armored equipment of the US Army is not a precedent for the Novo Selo base. Six years ago, the base had joint Bulgarian-American exercises with many more American tanks. The number of 5 tanks means practically one platoon, say people familiar with it. Standard has learned that US and English officers have visited Sliven Military Hospital, which will provide part of the medical care for exercise.
