Pope Benedict XVI issued a disc of prayer recordings. The album was presented in the Roman basilica “Santa Maria in Araceli”, the Associated Press reported.
The album is called “Alma Mater – Music from the Vatican”, and in it the Holy Father’s voice sounds against the background of classical music and Gregorian chants performed by the choir of St. Peter’s Cathedral. The Pope sings a church song and says prayers in different languages, among them Italian, French and Latin.
The 49-minute album contains eight tracks, Vatican press director Federico Lombardi said. According to him, no special recording sessions were made with the participation of Benedict XVI, but recordings of his voice were taken from the Vatican Radio archive.
The disc is technically unique and a one-of-a-kind experiment, as despite their apparent similarity, traditional Gregorian chants and classical music are performed in a completely different way,” the Vatican explained.
An Italian, an Englishman and a Moroccan are the three composers invited for the arrangement.
The disc will be released by the famous American record company “Geffen Records”, which released albums of rock groups such as “Nirvana” and “Guns and Roses”. It will be released worldwide on November 30. Part of the proceeds will go to charity – to finance the musical education of disadvantaged children.
Our participation in the project is dictated by two goals, explained the director of the Vatican press office: to spread the spiritual message of the faith and to bring the Pope closer to a wider audience.
