The Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg led a protest in the Georgian capital on Monday against Azerbaijanwhere the climate summit started COP29 and which he called an “authoritarian” country.
According to the activist, the Azerbaijani authorities are using COP29 as a “front”, while reinforcing control within the country and instigating tensions in the Caucasus.
Dozens of Thunberg’s followers accompanied her in the protest with banners against repression, in favor of the release of political prisoners in Azerbaijan and in defense of the Armenians expelled from Nagorno Karabakhterritory under Azerbaijani control since the military operation of September 2023.
“I am protesting against the climate summit in Azerbaijan because they have a repressive regime there”the activist told the Georgian press.
This Monday, coinciding with the start of COP29 in Baku, the young woman published an opinion article in The Guardian newspaper where she also denounced the UN’s decision to organize a climate summit in an “authoritarian petrostate that does not respect human rights.” .
«Azerbaijan’s entire economy is based on fossil fuels; “Oil and gas exports from the state oil company Socar represent close to 90% of the country’s exports.”points out in the article.
According to Thunberg, despite its statements, Baku has no intention of adopting climate measures and only plans to expand fossil fuel production, which is incompatible with the objectives of the Paris Agreement to combat climate change.
The activist also accuses Azerbaijan of carrying out “ethnic cleansing” of the Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakhwhere Baku now intends to build a “Green Energy Zone” and repress civil society in its own country. EFE (I)
