Meteorology Anniina Valtonen34, has noticed how many people are annoyed by the grayness of Finland, especially in November and December. According to Valtonen, they are usually the cloudiest months in Finland.
Now Valtonen explains to his social media followers in his Instagram post what causes the grayness of the season.
– The culprit is a cloud called Altostratus. Altostratus, or curtain cloud, covers the whole sky gray and thick in humid weather, and the sun cannot be seen through it, he says.
According to Valtonen, Altostratus is caused by two factors, one of which is the southwest flow.
– In autumn, there is generally a mild and moist air flow from the south or southwest. The flow from the Atlantic cools on its way towards the Nordic countries, when the moisture condenses into a huge sheet of clouds, or altostratus, the meteorologist explains.
Valtonen names the second cause as the fact that in autumn and winter the sun shines so low and for a short time that it no longer warms much.
– After the summer, on the other hand, there is a lot of moisture in the air in autumn. Cold air “holds” less moisture than warm air, so the excess moisture condenses into clouds. In this situation, altostratus. Sunshine and clear skies are an exception to the norm in November, he opens.
– Altostratus is nothing without a drizzle, so let it rain love. Grayness can also be wonderful! Valtonen writes in the end.
Along with his text, Valtonen has published a picture of himself in a striped shirt with hearts raining from sewn clouds.

Valtonen recently opened a glossary of the scientific field of meteorology to Iltalehti. He said that meteorological slang can sometimes be very ambiguous.
We might giggle among ourselves quite wildly when we talk about, for example, the “damp downstairs”. It means that fog may be formed.
Valtonen returned to the TV screen in the fall after parental leave. Valtonen’s first child was born in December 2023.
More information about Altostratus
According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Altostratus is a uniform gray cloud layer that often produces snowfall. However, the rain usually evaporates before it reaches the ground.
The lower limit of Altostratus, often called a veil cloud, is typically at an altitude of 2-5 kilometers. The tax cloud is “dull gray” in color and darkens so much that the sunlight does not stand out much from it.
