Under Paris 2: Netflix is developing a sequel with the return of Bérénice Bejo

With its post-apocalyptic ending, the French film Under Paris it doesn’t necessarily lend itself, narratively speaking, to a sequel. But after achieving the best launch for a non-English language film on Netflix with over 102.3 million views, the director
Xavier Gens is planning a new underwater adventure, as he confirms Variety.

In a recent interview with La Tribune, Bejo said the sequel will begin filming in September 2025. While sources close to the production confirmed to Variety that the project is indeed in development, it’s still early days and filming could begin as early as 2026.

Released on Netflix on June 5th ahead of the Paris Olympics,
Under Paris begins with a shark expert named Sophia (Bérénice
Bejo
) who tragically lost her husband while researching a Mako shark named Lilith. This tragic loss tears her apart even more than the shark tore her man to pieces.

But years later, when Lilith has inexplicably reached the Seine, Sophia fights to save Paris from the jaws of death, battling ignorant government officials who refuse to believe that they themselves are in the middle of a shark movie. The director Xavier
Gens
of Frontier(s) fame, is known for his risky choices, but that won’t prepare you for the ending of Under
Paris
.

Under Paris remains the second most watched non-English film on US Netflix to date
Troll. The film received harsh criticism in France, where local genre films rarely do well, but it was an international success. It was even praised by horror master Stephen King, who admitted on X that he initially thought that “it would have been a joke movie, like ‘Sharknado’” and that he found it “really very good”.
