Unfortunately, it remains the third cause of death in our country after cardiovascular diseases and tumors: we are talking aboutstroke with numbers that are even higher in the poorest nations where almost one in two people can be affected. However, medical progress has meant that new and promising pharmacological treatments are available for the future, especially if this pathology is caught in good time.

While today there are already treatments with drugs that are administered via intravenous so as to eliminate the training of clots, among the innovations of 2025 in Italy also the treatment with tenecteplase as the professor explained. Simona Sacco, neurologist at the University of L’Aquila. “It is proving to be more effective and easier to administer than alteplase, so far the standard drug for the treatment of ischemic stroke. As it is written in literature scientifically, tenecteplase is a drug capable of managing intravascular clots: in the United States it is approved to treat myocardial infarction but is used more and more because it is able to eliminate the formation of thrombi which are crucial when a stroke occurs cerebral. This drug is administered intravenously but, for now, only for the pathology described above. Furthermore, a recently presented scientific study has highlighted that for some types of cerebral hemorrhage it is possible to eliminate the hematoma thanks to small catheters.
The role of artificial intelligence
Parallel to these new perspectives, great importance is also given to the most modern mechanical devices capable of removing clots which “have undergone significant improvements, allowing the blocked vessels to be reopened in a more effective and safe way”, explains the expert. Thanks to new techniques imaging (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) and the help of software equipped with artificial intelligence, it is possible to reliably identify patients who have potentially salvageable brain tissue, extending the intervention time window from the initial 4.5-6 hours up to 24 hours”, reassures Sacco.
What future
Between drugs and artificial intelligence, in this way, it will be possible to intervene on many more patients, saving many lives and above all improving the health conditions of those who survive strokes. Important steps forward also for hemorrhagic stroke, a pathology fortunately less widespread but still more serious than cerebral stroke because a blood vessel inside the brain breaks.
