NATO countries that are next to Russia are concerned about a possible peace deal in Ukraine. Vladimir Putin can use this to strengthen himself strategically. Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur warned that “hundreds of thousands of troops” could be withdrawn from eastern Ukraine and moved to the border with NATO countries if a cease-fire is reached.

These troops could allow Russia to attack Ukraine again or threaten NATO members. A ceasefire would put Russia in a strong position to rebuild its forces, military experts say.

Donald Trump could propose that Ukraine will not join NATO for 20 years while the US continues to provide weapons to deter Russia from further attacks.
