Milei deregulates the postal service in Argentina –

Javier Milei, president of Argentina.

The Government of Javier Miley deregulated the postal service to promote competition, by removing obstacles to the entry of new suppliers that compete with the state service Argentine Mailas was known this Monday in a decree published in the Official Gazette.

“With this decision, all vestiges of postal predominance and the exclusivities granted to state postal companies regarding the sending of document letters, telegrams and parcels of up to 50 kilos are eliminated, by opening up competition and facilitating access for other operators.”the Executive reported in a statement.

The Milei Government tried to place Correo Argentino – with 1,400 branches throughout the country – among the companies to be privatized, but had to give up due to lack of support from Congress.

The decree published this Monday eliminated “excessive requirements to carry out the activity and records that imply greater bureaucracy and less transparency,” because “this overregulation of postal activity generated barriers to entry into the market, restricting competition, which led to a service of worse quality and higher prices, harming the user of the service.

The decree also seeks to “implement measures that promote transparency, digitalization and greater security of the postal service.”

As of this modification, to be a postal operator, legal entities must register with the application authority in a simple, electronic, free and declarative manner.

Registration will be made only once at the beginning of the activity and will constitute sufficient authorization to carry out the activity, which may begin automatically five days from the date of registration.

In addition, natural persons will be allowed to offer urban courier service, with or without a vehicle, in short periods and short distances.

The decree guarantees that postal operators that carry out activities in the local and international postal market will be able to freely establish the staffing, the modality, the types of services provided, the equipment, means of transport and premises that they require for their activity.

Likewise, it enables the copies and proof of delivery to the recipients of the telegram and document letter to be in digital format, as well as the backup. EFE (I)
