On February 23, 2025, early elections will be held in Germany, according to the German Press Agency DPA, which cites sources from the two largest parties, the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Christian Democrats (CDU).
However, the official decision will have to be taken by the Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
According to Reuters, the proposal for the February 23 election was made by the three parties that make up Olaf Solz’s governing coalition (SPD, Greens and FDP). The Rheinische Post newspaper first reported the specific date.
As Bloomberg reports, Solz’s social democratic SPD reached an agreement with opposition lawmakers to go to the polls in about 3 months.
Thus, the chancellor will first have to activate the procedure for a vote of confidence in the lower house of the Bundestag. That vote is likely to be held in the first fortnight of December and, once the chancellor loses it, he can ask the president to dissolve parliament and set an election date within 60 days.
It is noted that the federal elections were initially scheduled for September 28, 2025.
