Donald Trump has tapped Marco Rubio as US secretary of state, tapping the Florida senator and former political rival to be the country’s top diplomat in his second administration.
Trump announced Rubio’s nomination on Wednesday, calling the senator “an extremely respected leader and a very strong voice for freedom.”
“He will be a strong defender of our nation, a true friend to our allies, and a fearless warrior who will never back down from our adversaries,” Trump said.
Rubio is known for his hawkish views on China and Iran in particular — and is not as isolationist as other Trump allies and foreign policy aides.
