Coach Timm Dietrich is leaving Werder Bremen at the end of the season

They have been talking and negotiating at Werder for weeks in order to keep Timm Dietrich (34) beyond the season. But now it is clear: the head coach of the women’s handball second division will not extend his two-year contract, which expires at the end of the season. “But it’s not because of the negotiations with Werder,” said Dietrich in an interview with WESER-KURIER on Wednesday. “We agreed on all the essential points about how we would have imagined competitive handball in Bremen in the future.” His The decision to leave Bremen after two years was purely of a private nature.

When he was ill for a long time at the start of the season and had to stay in his house near Hanover, it changed his professional thinking. In Bremen he is working full-time as a handball coach for the first time, but he has given up his job as a teacher to do so. In the future he would like to work as a trainer closer to his home again. Dietrich came to Werder from third division team TV Hannover-Badenstedt for the 2023/24 season. In its first season, the Bremen team achieved eighth place, their best placement since joining the 2nd Bundesliga.

Dietrich would like to end the current season, in which Werder slipped into the bottom of the table: “Even if we didn’t get enough points: In terms of the results, we didn’t have a chance. I’m sure we’ll get the points we need.” At the weekend, Werder achieved their second win of the season with a 37:24 win against Nürtingen. Dietrich emphasizes: “This decision was not easy for me, especially because I had a very good offer to extend my contract.”

Martin Lange, chairman of handball at SV Werder, explained: “We are very satisfied with Timm Dietrich’s work so far and signaled to him early on that we would like to extend the contract and work with him in the long term. We therefore very much regret his decision, but of course respect the personal reasons.” It is now a matter of mobilizing all our strength “to continue to fight our way out of the difficult sporting situation.” The question of who will take over the coaching position for the new season should be resolved at an early stage.

Anne-Kathrin Laufmann, managing director of SV Werder, explained: “Timm Dietrich has shown that we have rightly entrusted him with the responsible task as handball head coach.” However, she can understand the coach’s personal reasons.
