Lisbon, November 13 (EFE) – The former soldier and activist Chelsea Manning assured this Wednesday in Lisbon that “there are no changes from one administration to another” in the US regarding the investigation of citizens by the Government.
So, she said this at a press conference at the Web Conference in the capital of Portugal, a technology fair, where she was asked about the results that influenced Republican Donald Trump in the US presidential elections.
“From a technical point of view, nothing changes,” said Manning, head of technological security at the American company Nym.
However, the former military officer stressed that this does not mean that citizens do not need to make sure they are safe on the internet: “We all need to keep an eye on these things at all times, no matter who who is in charge.”
In his opinion, large technology companies are interested in working with the US Government, regardless of who the president is, although he emphasized that it is a “hybrid authoritarian regime”. currently, like those in Turkey, Russia, Hungary or Brazil.
Manning presented again at the Web Summit the tool he developed with the company Nym Technologies, a virtual private network (VPN) powered by ‘blockchain’ (a digital technology that guarantees the authenticity of internet activity), since done in last year’s edition.
Chelsea Manning released hundreds of thousands of classified documents from the United States to Wikileaks in 2010 and was initially sentenced to 35 years in prison.
After spending seven years in prison, she was pardoned by then US President Barack Obama and released from prison.
The Lisbon Web Summit, which has been held in the Portuguese capital since 2016, comes to an end this Thursday after four frenetic days that have brought together more than 3,000 emerging companies . EFE
