Shame! A BSP municipal councilor was attacked and choked by a local businessman! –

I cannot close my eyes to the shameful incident at today’s meeting of the Municipal Council in Botevgrad. The BSP municipal councilor Hristo Yakimov was attacked and choked by a local businessman because he allowed himself to present facts about abuses in the awarding of public contracts for construction in the municipality.

The brutal attack took place in front of the mayor Georgi Georgiev, who is being investigated for violations found by the Audit Chamber and the NRA, in front of other municipal councilors, citizens and journalists.

We can safely say that the first gun of the GERB campaign for the local elections went off in Botevgrad. True, there were no gunshot wounds, but the attempt to quite literally silence the opposition hardly hides the desire for such an end result. If they start with physical violence and public humiliation from now on, how will Bulgaria look in the fall – in the midst of the election campaign.

Take my comment on this ugly scene not as a political statement, but as the normal reaction of a citizen who is tired of being taught about the rule of law while constantly learning about its trampling and violence against those who actually try to enforce it protect, not just promise it. I hope that the foreign ambassadors will also react actively in this case to protect the rule of law. Because selectivity in reactions to defend legitimacy ultimately undermines efforts to win it.

They will not frighten us in this way, because we are determined to fight against the corrupt model in power, against the “fighting” style of management – both in Botevgrad and in the whole of Bulgaria. We will also show the problems, violations, and abuses of those who like to brag that they can “fight”.

I expect both the government and law enforcement agencies to fulfill their obligations in connection with the ugly incident in Botevgrad. However, I expect all other competent authorities in the state to check the facts of abuse presented by the municipal councilor Hristo Yakimov and to take the actions that we all expect from them as soon as possible if they find violations of the law. It is no less important that all political forces condemn this ugly attack on democracy. I am also waiting for their reaction.
