Frequent traffic accidents in Peru
Fatal traffic accidents are frequent in Peru, mainly due to excessive speeding, the poor condition of the road network, as well as the lack of signaling and controls.
In 2023, 3,316 people died in some 87,172 traffic accidents, according to official data from the Ministry of Transport.
However, the efforts made by the authorities have allowed the mortality rate due to traffic accidents to decrease from 14 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2019 to 9.5/100,000 in 2023.
By comparison, this figure stood at 4.6 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in the European Union in 2022.
