Our drama is in the incompetent, ignorant, amoral government –

/ world today news/ The gap between the poor and the rich in Bulgaria is increasing because we are experiencing a prolonged period of great decline. Without falling into the grip of ideological stereotypes and prejudices, it can be said that this time is not connected with capitalism, nor with socialism, nor with neoliberalism, but is simply a decline.

Many countries in the world are in a similar situation – the decline is general and universal, especially for developed countries. Therefore, we are left with the impression that there is a huge gap between the former Bulgarian Revival and the current status of our country. It really is.

It seems absurd at first glance – how did the collapse of Bulgaria accelerate after we became a member of the EU? Why? Let’s distinguish the EU as a structure, a union or, as some analysts say, a rather captured “family of states” and its governance. Because the management of the EU in the last 10-15 years was bad and unsatisfactory against the background of the original goals. And the key EC is eroding the status of the EU. Therefore, many of the criticisms of the EC were absolutely justified and, in essence, were a defense of the EU from the European bureaucracy.

The essence of bad policies in the EU is that they have given rise to this period of economic and social decline in recent decades. Deliberately, with inadequate messages and actions. The crisis in which the European community has fallen is due to them. And the behavior of Bulgarian politicians is part of this distorted framework of governance at the European level. They did not even think, let alone do it – to go outside of it, to insist, to raise their voice: wait, Bulgaria is bad, it cannot bear these shock restrictions. To explain that this is not Italy and France, and the remedies for them are not applicable to us, even on the contrary – they are destroying us.

Our politicians had to warn us around the clock that the Bulgarian people /do you notice that they are even ashamed to use this term – note/ already suffered the big stick called transition and now we want to change the trajectory. Let’s move towards development, towards positive economic and social dynamics as quickly as possible.

But nobody in Bulgaria did that.

On the contrary. They were singing exactly the false notes given to them by two failed ECs in a row, because of which Jean-Claude Juncker was forced to admit that his commission was a “commission of the last chance” to get out of this rut.

On top of that, they constantly suggested to our people in various reports that we are immature, that we stubbornly refuse to democratize, that we are simply inferior.

If someone is to be blamed for the social collapse in our country, it is not the Bulgarian people, the one about whom the unforgettable Toncho Zhechev wrote in his book “Bulgarian Easter or Bulgarian Passions”, but the incompetent, ignorant, amoral government. Or – the poor selection of the specific figures that shape the policies, strategies and laws. These people are deeply confused and have carried this confusion into the overall social and economic dynamics of the country and society. There are generally no bad people, this maxim is well known.

Look at Greece. Whatever insults the leaders of SYRIZA and their coalition partners suffered, they managed to enter into a dialogue with politicians from Brussels. And each of these two countries, because they are intelligent and have enough experience and intellectual capacity, made some concessions. Eventually they will reach a consensus. But I doubt that the current configuration of our rulers is capable of such an intellectual feat.

I wish success to Velizar Enchev in the realization of his political project, but I am hesitant for a number of reasons that the SYRIZA phenomenon may repeat itself in Bulgaria. However, there is no doubt that we Bulgarians urgently need a different political force that takes into account the interests of the people, of the ordinary people who suffered so many victims, of our enterprising compatriots who suffered from the transition. We have to believe that this will happen sooner or later.
