Berlin: Higher, expensive, lots of glass – this is where Wegner wants to play New York

Berlin offers a big city flair like no other German city. To some tourists it may certainly seem as if there is a small New York in the east of Germany. CDU Mayor Wegner now wants to bring a small piece of the American metropolis over.

More skyscrapers in Berlin?

Mayor Kai Wegner was visiting New York. There he immediately made big plans for Berlin. He was impressed by the high-rise buildings and skyscrapers that make up the US city. The gigantic buildings should also come to our capital.

“We have to build higher in Berlin,” the CDU politician told the “Berliner Morgenpost” on his business trip. Skyscrapers like the World Trade Center with a height of 541 meters are not needed, but “we have to have a debate now,” said Wegner. “We want to do real high-rise planning.”

This is where the buildings should be

Wegner even has an idea where he would like to have the skyscrapers erected. The mayor is certain that Alexanderplatz is the best place for this. Architect Christoph Langhof is said to be on board. He designed the Upper West at Breitscheidplatz in Berlin.

There has to be a lot on offer in order to get the necessary change. “The stay also has to be fun,” explains Langhof to the newspaper. Anyone who leaves their luxury loft must also feel comfortable around the high-rise buildings. In its current form, it’s hard to imagine Alexanderplatz being liked by millionaires. “You need greenery and fountains and lighting in the evening,” answers Wegner. “You don’t feel really comfortable,” he says, when you walk across the Alex at a late hour.
