Meta: More data protection on Instagram & Facebook for commercial breaks

Do you want more data protection on Insta and no more personalized advertising? This works now – but there is a catch.

Because in order for you to get less personalized advertising, you have to – surprise – look at more non-personalized advertising. Meta announced this on Tuesday. You can use some of these ads on Insta and Facebook do not skip for a few seconds.

No personalized advertising on Instagram & Facebook? Not quite!

For the advertising that will then be displayed to you, only data like Alter, Location and Gender be used. According to Meta, much more of your data was used before.

If you don’t want non-skippable advertising, you’ll have to agree to more personalized ads.

Data protection: EU criticizes Meta

And why the change? The EU Commission had criticized the fact that you only had two options on Facebook and Instagram:

  1. an ad-free option for a monthly fee
  2. a free version with personalized advertising

The apps without advertising will continue to be available – but the price will drop to up to 5.99 euros per month.

An EU spokesman emphasized that the Commission did not approve of the new model and that it had not been agreed upon with them.
