British novelist Samantha Harvey was awarded the prestigious 2024 Booker Prize literary prize for her fifth novel, titled “Orbital,” during a ceremony in London on Tuesday night.
The book chronicles a day in the life of six astronauts, two men and four women, on a space station.
Constructed in almost meditative fragments, “Orbital” offers a reflection on grief, desire and the climate crisis.
Harvey, 49, was already on the Booker Prize shortlist in 2009 with his first novel, titled “The Wilderness.”

The writer dedicated the award to “all people who speak for and not against the Earth and work for and not against peace.”
Five women and one man were competing this year for the prize, which includes a reward of 50,000 pounds (about $64,000) and the assurance of international success.
The Booker Prize, one of the most prestigious literary awards in the world, which rewards works of fiction in English, contributed to the success of writers such as Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood and Arundhati Roy.
