Canada, which is pursuing the introduction of submarines, visited the plants of Hanwha Ocean and Hyundai Heavy Industries to directly confirm the construction capabilities of the ‘K-Submarine’. As this project is a very large project with a total order size estimated at 60 trillion won, a fierce battle for orders is expected between the two companies.

According to the industry on the 12th, Canadian Navy Commander Angus Topsy visited Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje business site on the 10th and discussed the Canadian submarine acquisition project.

Naval Commander Tapsi personally toured the actual construction site of the Jang Bogo-III Batch-II submarine proposed by Hanwha Ocean for the Canadian submarine project.

A Hanwha Ocean official said, “We emphasized that the Jang Bogo-III Batch-II submarine is the only model that can meet all requirements of the Canadian Navy,” adding, “Through technology transfer, we will also be able to independently perform submarine maintenance (ISS) in Canada.” “We plan to provide support so that this can be done,” he said.

Following Hanwha Ocean, Naval Commander Tapsi also visited the Ulsan headquarters of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. He inspected the main submarine of the Korean Navy, which was built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and is in depot maintenance, and toured the submarine construction and production facilities to directly confirm HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ submarine construction capabilities.

An official from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries explained, “We introduced the plan for the Canadian submarine introduction project, and we also actively discussed cooperation measures such as research and development and human resource training between the two countries related to the project.”

The reason why both companies are putting effort into the Canadian submarine project is because it is a very large project with a pure project cost exceeding 20 trillion won and a total of 60 trillion won including follow-up military support.

Currently, Canada is carrying out the ‘Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP)’, which will introduce 8 to 12 3,000-ton submarines. In addition to Korea, it is known that related information has been requested from France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden.

Accordingly, the government is also taking steps to win orders for the Canadian submarine project. President Yoon Seok-yeol also mentioned in a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the 30th of last month, “I hope that our companies will participate in the project to strengthen Canada’s defense capabilities in the future and strengthen mutually beneficial defense industry cooperation.”

Some in the industry are also pointing out that Hanwha Ocean and Hyundai Heavy Industries should form a ‘one team’ and take action in order to win orders.

In fact, the two companies recently had a difficult time winning a 10 trillion won order for a surface ship ordered by the Australian government. The German and Japanese companies selected as final candidates were pointed out as the reason for the defeat because they fought against each other, unlike the German and Japanese companies that teamed up with the government to fight for the order for several weeks. Currently, the two companies are engaged in a legal battle over the Korean Destroyer Destroyer (KDDX) project.

An industry insider said, “In addition to Canada, there are still orders remaining for the ‘Orca Project’, which is part of the Polish military’s submarine modernization project, and the Philippines’ 2 trillion won medium-sized submarine introduction project,” adding, “As they failed to win an order for an Australian surface ship, the competition between the two companies for orders is even fiercer.” “It will happen,” he said.
