4,468 people started their studies at the University of Bremen in the winter semester of 2024/25. While the number of students at many universities nationwide is falling, the University of Bremen recorded an increase in the number of first-semester students compared to the previous year.
The semester has already begun, and the final evaluation of all student numbers is now available: In the current winter semester, 3,156 people enrolled in undergraduate courses, which primarily include bachelor’s courses. That is 62 more than in the winter semester 2023/24. There were 1,312 enrollments in the master’s degree programs; the number increased by 80 compared to the previous year. In addition, the University of Bremen carried out a first-semester enrollment process for the summer semester of 2024 for the first time, during which a further 350 first-semester students were able to enroll. This means that a total of 492 more students were able to enroll in the first semester than was the case in 2023.
“These pleasing figures show that the University of Bremen offers prospective students an attractive and contemporary offer,” says University Rector Professor Jutta Günther. “This includes not only established courses such as law, business administration or teaching, but also innovative new offerings in the areas of AI and sustainability.”
In the area of undergraduate courses, the majority of enrollments were in the subjects of law, business administration and computer science, as well as teacher training courses. Most of the first-year students in the master’s degree programs were in the course Transnational Law the Hanse Law School as well as the subjects of business administration and computer science.
New English-language degree programs are proving very popular
The number of applications for two English-language degree programs that are being offered for the first time this winter semester was also high: in the bachelor’s degree program “Natural Sciences for Sustainability(Natural Sciences for Sustainability), students deal with sustainability topics from a biological, physical and geoscientific perspective. The course of study „Articifial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems“ (Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems) provides students with knowledge about the theory, practice and applications of artificial intelligence.
High proportion of international students
The figures also show that the University of Bremen is in high demand among international students: nine percent of students in the undergraduate courses stated that they had a foreign first nationality. Students with Turkish, Chinese and Ukrainian citizenship are particularly well represented here. Of the first-year students in the master’s program, 33 percent even have foreign citizenship. They come from 70 nations, primarily from India, Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Ghana.
