  • The district court sentenced the woman to three years in prison and to pay the baby and her parents thousands of euros in damages.

The district court of Satakunta has given its verdict on the so-called Huittinen baby abduction.

It condemned Tiia Tuulia in Juurma22, for aggravated assault, aggravated deprivation of liberty and fraud to three years in prison.

He was sent to Turku prison.

Juurmaa forcibly took a newborn baby from its mother in Huittinis on September 28, 2023. He had lured the baby’s mother to a stroller date on social media, posing as the mother of small children herself.

During the carriage date, he hit the mother he had just met in the back of the head with a hammer. The woman fell short from the force of the blow. Juurmaa called for help and promised to take the baby to its father. In fact, she jumped on a bus going to Helsinki with the baby.

The police stopped the bus in Meilahti, Helsinki. The baby was taken from Juurmaa’s possession unharmed.

The district court of Satakunta characterized the act as exceptionally outrageous. Juurmaa had taken a one-week-old baby away from its parents with great deliberation and planning.

It considered that Juurmaa’s sole purpose was to take the baby to the other side of the country and mistake her former partner for raising the child as her own.

He denied the crimes

Tiia Juurmaa approached the mother of a newborn baby, lying that she was the mother of small children herself. He lied that he had just moved to Huittis, even though he lived in Pori. Trial file

Juurmaa denied having committed the crime. He claimed to the police that he had taken the baby with him, because his father could not be seen at the agreed meeting place. He was busy. She claimed that she intended to take the baby to the Women’s Clinic for safety.

Juurmaa completely denied the mother’s abuse both during police interrogations and in the district court. He claimed that the children had been throwing stones at the nearby sports field and speculated that one of the stones would have hit the back of the woman’s head and caused the injuries.

Baby items and a hammer had been found in Juurmaa’s backpack, from which the DNA of the abused mother was collected. Vasaran had bought Juurmaa the day before the act.

A few days before his criminal acts, Juurmaa had started messaging his former partner. She lied to a man in his twenties that he gave birth to this baby.

The two planned a life together on the husband’s family farm in South Karelia.

Juurmaa sent the man pictures of her “baby” and claimed that she was with him in the hospital in Meilahti. From there, the man was supposed to pick them up at his home.

The man prepared for everyday life with a baby by buying a safety bassinet, baby clothes and accessories for more than 700 euros.

Juurmaa admitted that he was guilty of fraud, but denied that he intended to carry out his scam to the end. He claimed that he only wanted to “fuck” the man.

The man got some of the supplies he bought returned when the fraud was discovered. The district court sentenced Juurmaa to compensate the man slightly more than 550 euros for that financial damage.

The proceedings of the case began in the Satakunta district court in January of the current year. The district court gave its interim judgment in February.

It considered that Juurmaa has acted as presented by the prosecutor, but ordered him to undergo a mental state examination. According to the investigation, Juurmaa was responsible at the time of the act, meaning he understood the consequences of his actions.

The Satakunta District Court gave its final verdict on November 12.

The district court ordered Juurma to compensate the baby’s mother a total of 8,000 euros and the baby’s father 5,000 euros for the suffering caused by the crimes. Juurma must pay 2,500 euros in damages to the baby he kidnapped.

In addition, Juurmaa must compensate the state for thousands of euros, including court costs.

The judgment is not binding.
