Find out how this proposal could transform urban mobility and the debates it sparks.
And if it was no longer possible to circulate by SUV in the big cities of France? It is in any case the bill made by Senator Ian Brossat. It will soon be debated.
An environmental and safety measure
Communist senator and Paris advisor Ian Brossat will very soon submit a bill. The latter aims to prohibit use SUVs in big cities. A measure that could scandal.
This proposal follows to the tragic event between Paul Varry, the cyclist run over by an SUV driver last October in the streets of Paris. In detailthe text explains this:
“The objective is to give local elected officials the means to regulate or even ban the presence of SUVs in town for environmental and safety reasons. In urban areas, where road sharing is sometimes difficult, banning SUVs in certain sectors seems necessary in order to protect other users.”
The chosen one is also based on the study carried out by Axa which indicates that “vehicles over 2.1 tonnes cause 10 to 27% more accidents than other segments”. She also explains that people hit by SUVs have “50% more likely to have fatal injuries”.
Which models are affected by this measure?
The senator also explained to our colleagues from BFM Paris-Île-de-France that this measure would also an ecological impact : “An electric SUV produces a 70% higher carbon footprint than a standard electric car.”
In fact, who would be affected by this law and in which areas in France? Initially, not all cities would be required to adopt this law. According to the elected official, he wants to let the towns choose: “Agglomerations which wish it, on the basis of a decision of the municipal council”.
In terms of models, the senator mainly targets vehicles the most cumbersome : “We are going to target a minority of vehicles, those which are the most bulky and which pose the most problems. In short, we are talking about thermal models weighing more than 1.8 tonnes and electric vehicles weighing more than 2 tonnes. he told the media.
The bill will soon be debated by national authorities. Nothing ensures that it will be adopted, especially if the latter is too controversial.
Especially since, in the example of tragic accident of the cyclist in Paris, the vehicle is not really to be questioned. Indeed, according to witnesses to the incident, it was of a voluntary act from the driver.
