New York. The American aircraft manufacturer Boeing reached a last-minute agreement this Monday to avoid a civil trial for the accident of one of its 737 MAX 8 planes operated by the Ethiopian Airlines airline, in which 157 people died in 2019.
With the trial scheduled to begin on Tuesday, sources close to the case told AFP that the company and the family of a young woman who died in the tragedy reached a settlement, which must still be approved by a judge.
According to a judicial source close to the case, the complaint in question referred to Manisha Nukavarapu, and the objective of the trial was simply “to determine the amount of compensation”, without examining “any element of Boeing’s responsibility”.
The judge will be informed of the agreement at a hearing on Tuesday, the source said.

Nukavarapu, single and without children, boarded an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 on March 10, 2019, to complete the flight between Addis Ababa and Nairobi.
But the plane crashed southeast of the Ethiopian capital six minutes after takeoff.
Several trials have been canceled due to agreements reached before the opening of the process, according to a court document from June 2023.
A source indicated that relatives of 155 victims filed civil complaints between April 2019 and March 2021, for wrongful death and negligence, among others.
As of October 22, there were “30 open complaints related to 29 deceased people,” said another source close to the case.
Boeing “publicly and in civil proceedings accepted responsibility for the MAX accidents, because the design of the MCAS (software anti-blockade) contributed to these events,” said a lawyer for the manufacturer during a hearing in October.
