On November 11th Cologne starts the new carnival session. This year the festival falls on a Monday. All information in the news blog.
8:48 p.m.: With this we end our live blog for today. We wish everyone a nice and safe evening and a safe journey home!
8:45 p.m.: The party continues loudly in Belgisch and on Zülpicher Straße, with helicopters constantly circling over the party zones. When asked by t-online, the police said they wanted to take an initial interim assessment late in the evening, but a “real” assessment would only follow in eight days, as incidents are sometimes only reported days later.

6:26 p.m: There are still a lot of Jecke out and about on the Alter Markt in the evening. They sway and dance to Brings’ version of “You Should Be 20 Again.”
5:14 p.m.: Many Jecken have been on their feet for more than seven hours and there is still a lot going on on Zülpicher Straße. Even if there were no big crowds like last year, there are still many carnivalists out and about.
4:58 p.m.: The little stalls in the city are particularly in demand at Carnival. After all, the Kölsch is cheaper here than in the pub or club. “There was a lot going on from this morning until 12 p.m.,” a kiosk owner on Venloer Strasse explained to a t-online reporter. He expects a big crowd again in the evening.
4:35 p.m.: In the meantime, uniformed federal police officers searched the railway embankment on Zülpicher Wall. The sound of a train horn could also be heard. As the federal police announced at the request of t-online, a person was on the tracks and a train then had to apply emergency braking. “The process has now been completed,” said the Federal Police spokeswoman.
4:19 p.m.: NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul attended the opening of the session at the Cologne Heumarkt. The CDU politician told WDR that major events such as the street carnival are becoming increasingly difficult to hold. There are two reasons for this, he said at the start of the carnival on Monday on WDR television. One is the terrorist threat. “We simply need a lot of instruments to notice: What is happening where?” he said.
