Rijksdaalder belonging to Queen Wilhelmina sold at auction for 4.5 tons

A gold Reichsdaalder belonging to Queen Wilhelmina was auctioned at an auction house in IJsselstein for almost half a million euros. according to RTV Utrecht it is the second most expensive Dutch coin of all time.

The gold Reichsdaalder was struck in 1898 at the coronation of Queen Wilhelmina. She was 18 years old at the time. The medal was designed by the Frisian sculptor, Pier Pander.

According to auctioneer Jacco Scheper, Wilhelmina coins are highly sought after by collectors. “She is more popular than William I, II and III and finishing Juliana’s medals is not an art,” he said.

Only two gold Wilhelmina Reichsdaalders were struck. One of these is in the national collection. The coin sold today was the only one available to collectors.

“It was amazing and very exciting today,” said auctioneer Scheper. “It was not possible to put applications in writing in advance. So everyone had kept their powder dry and we didn’t know what would happen. You sensed that it was a special time. Web the room and people started filming.”

Finally, the coin was sold for 360,000 euros. Including auction costs, the total amount is 453,600 euros. The buyer remains anonymous.

The most expensive coin in our country was sold at the same auction house last May. It was then a quarter from 1891 that was worth over a million was sold.
